Impact of product perishability on agri-food supply chains design

Perishability of agri-food products impacts the economic, environmental, and social aspects supply chains (AFSCs). Product perishability is, usually, considered in tactical operational decisions, but not strategic ones, such as design AFSC. The contribution this paper is that it investigates impact product on an AFSC design. To do so, first, a novel mixed-integer linear programming model proposed to entire AFSCs with multiple-products, which considers capacity, planting, harvesting, transporting constraints for multiple-period horizon. A set scenarios generated by varying products’ shelf life analysed. results show relevant when designing AFSCs, especially short life. AFSC's economic performance improves considered. can also help determining investment needed extend while remaining profitable. Other uses could include planning already place.
